Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal literally means “around the tooth” and refers to keeping the gum and bone tissue around the tooth healthy. Periodontal Disease is the second most common disease on earth and the number one cause of tooth loss over 35 years of age. Periodontal Disease starts in the early years with gingivitis (gum inflammation) and progressively starts to involve the bone causing bone loss, gum infections (not the same as tooth infections) and eventually tooth loss.
Prevention and Treatment
The easiest and cheapest way to prevent or treat Periodontal Disease is with meticulous home care (brushing and flossing). Now you know why at Lakeside Family Dentistry we are constantly reminding you to do these things daily.
A couple of other things to consider are recent research has shown direct links between Periodontal Disease and cardio-vascular problems, diabetes, and other systemic diseases. Also, smokers make up the vast majority of our serious cases.
